Having remained a self-proclaimed ‘joinery’ for well over fifty years now, you’d be forgiven for thinking that we leave uPVC windows and doors by the wayside. In actual fact, we see the value in providing homeowners with both uPVC and timber, but there’s no denying that the latter has seen a continued resurgence in popularity during recent years. Does this indicate the end of uPVC let’s find out!
The short answer to the question is no. The simple reason why being that uPVC is a more tempting prospect than timber for certain homeowners in the UK. Though increasing in popularity every day, timber is still considered a premium addition despite currently being the most affordable it’s ever been. uPVC is still the most affordable by comparison, an ideal choice for those not too concerned with style or are working on a budget.
Timber
The biggest appeal timber has is the material’s inherently vintage aesthetic style. Very much reminiscent of the windows and doors you’d expect to see throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, especially when combined with classic styles and patterns they make the perfect fit for those residing in traditional homes. In addition to this, modern timber boasts many 21st century benefits such as high insulation, long lifespan, and rot resistance.
uPVC
It used to be, thanks to the home improvement boom of the 1980s, you couldn’t move for the amount of uPVC windows and doors found in British properties. This is largely due to how cost-effective, flexible, and low maintenance they were. These many factors and advantages still ring true today, making them a popular choice regardless of preferred window style.
As well as aesthetically, timber is on the up and up amongst homeowners due to the sheer amount of financial they can add to a property for those thinking of relocating. Timber has a longer lifespan, is often preferred stylistically, and suit contemporary and period homes alike. We mentioned earlier that timber is seen as premium, and this doesn’t go unnoticed for real estate agents upon valuation.
Truth is, at present, there continues to be a place for both uPVC and timber for those looking to improve their homes. While uPVC still reigns supreme, it could be a case that timber reaches parity in just a few short years. For more information, Reddish Joinery today either via 0161 969 7474 or an online message.
