There is a material that is stronger, more durable and more weatherproof than conventional timber: and no, it’s not a metal. It’s actually a type of timber: Accoya.
Accoya is the brand name of a type of sustainable softwood which has exceptional performance qualities and lifespan. We create a number of our windows, doors, conservatories and orangeries from this material here at Reddish Joinery.
Part of the incredible performance qualities of Accoya are created through the way that the wood is treated. The acetylation treatment process which Accoya wood is put through alters the cellular structure of the timber. This reduces its ability to absorb water by up to 80%, reducing the rate at which it rots and making it less attractive to pests such as insects and fungi.
Accoya wood offers a lot of benefits that makes it an amazing material to use for home improvement products.
Accoya wood is known across the construction industry for its exceptional strength. This is due in part to the acetylation treatment process, which modifies timber cells, increasing the dimensional stability of the wood. As a result, Accoya wood doesn’t swell and shrink with changing humidity, making it suitable for use in a range of high-pressure and weight settings.
Due to both its insect-repellent qualities and its anti-rot properties, Accoya has an exceptionally long lifespan: anywhere from 30-50 years and up! In some cases, Accoya timber will last even longer. This enhanced durability makes Accoya wood perfect in structures that you consider a lifetime investment; such as conservatories and orangeries, and timber windows.
Again, thanks to the acetylation process that the wood is put through, the ability of Accoya timber to absorb excess water is greater reduced. This means that the overall weatherproofing properties of the wood are drastically increased. Unlike many other timbers, Accoya can be used in a range of climatic settings with no problems; whether its the rain-soaked Highlands of Scotland, or the sunny Isles of Scilly.
If you want to enhance the lifespan of windows, doors, conservatories and orangeries around your home, Accoya wood is the perfect material to choose. Here at Reddish Joinery, we offer a variety of our products in Accoya. Find out more by giving us a call on 0161 969 7474 or sending us an email.
